Larval dispersal from an energetic tidal channel and implications for blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) shellfisheries

چکیده
Abstract Complex coastal currents control early-stage larval dispersal from intertidal populations, and late-stage settlement patterns, but are often poorly resolved in models. Generally, there is high uncertainty the timing of spawning, which markedly affects dispersal. In this study, we describe physical parameters that induce spawning events blue mussel, Mytilus edulis , using a variation Condition Index (which relates mass meat to shell) as proxy. We developed high-resolution Eulerian hydrodynamic model, coupled with Lagrangian particle tracking quantify potential mussel larvae based on differing dates obtained field data. Our results showed (1) timings cannot be explained solely by ‘thermal shocks’ sea or air temperatures (i.e. fluctuations temperature causing stress); (2) larger generally occurred during neap tides; (3) simulated was largely not always predicted averaged current pathways (calculated over two weeks period); (4) self-recruitment low at sites associated strong tidal currents. These have important implications for shellfisheries stock management sustainability. Specific mussels shellfishery beds off North Wales dispersed more than 25 km one week so could feasibly contribute wider population throughout northern part Irish Sea.

Gill Development and its functional and evolutionary implications in the blue mussel Mytilus edulis (Bivalvia: Mytilidae).
Study of gill development in bivalve larvae and postlarvae provides information on the evolution of this organ and feeding mechanisms of early stages. Scanning electron microscopy was used to document the development of the filibranch homorhabdic gill in hatchery-reared larval, postlarval, and juvenile Mytilus edulis. Four key stages were identified during gill development: (1) transfer of the ...
متن کاملIdentification and Antithrombotic Activity of Peptides from Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis) Protein
The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) reportedly contains many bioactive components of nutritional value. Water-, salt- and acid-soluble M. edulis protein fractions were obtained and the proteins were trypsinized. The resultant peptides were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). 387 unique peptides were identified t...

متن کاملMercury-binding proteins from the marine mussel, Mytilus edulis.
The marine mussel, Mytilus edulis, possesses low molecular weight, metal-binding proteins which can be induced by and, in turn, bind mercury when individuals are exposed to low, but elevated concentrations of mercury as HgCl2. Induction of the proteins by exposure of mussels to copper, cadmium, or mercury is associated with enhanced tolerance to mercury toxicity. Mercury-binding proteins isolat...
متن کاملA novel mitochondrial genome organization for the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis.
The sequence of 13.9 kilobases (kb) of the 17.1-kb mitochondrial genome of Mytilus edulis has been determined, and the arrangement of all genes has been deduced. Mytilus mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) contains 37 genes, all of which are transcribed from the same DNA strand. The gene content of Mytilus is typically metazoan in that it includes genes for large and small ribosomal RNAs, for a complete ...
